Door Installation - what to expect

Front and back door replacement is a fast-turnaround job - most installers fit in a single day - but it's also the point of entry where security, thermal performance and appearance have to work together. Composite doors dominate the UK market, with uPVC still popular for back doors and aluminium bifolds for rear extensions.

Composite doors are made of a solid timber or foam core wrapped in a glass-reinforced plastic skin, and they cost roughly double a plain uPVC door but last 30+ years without warping. The three names to look for are Rockdoor, Solidor and Endurance - each offers different colour ranges, glass options and locking specs. Multi-point locking (5-point at minimum, PAS 24 certified) is now standard on any decent front door.

Bifold and sliding patio doors are a different job entirely - larger units, often needing a steel lintel and a level threshold, and the aluminium frame quality varies wildly. Look for thermally-broken profiles under 1.6 W/m²K and marine-grade powder coat finishes if you're within 10 miles of the coast.
